Southpointe Chamber hatches Marcellus Chamber
REPRINT FROM Pittsburgh Business Times - by Anya Litvak Date: Friday, April 29, 2011, 6:47am EDT
The Southpointe Chamber of Commerce is hatching another chamber — the Marcellus Shale Chamber, whose inaugural meeting is this morning. The goal is to figure out what exactly this chamber will be.
For the first year, all 400 companies in the Southpointe Chamber are automatic members of the Marcellus Chamber. After that, there’ll be a separate fee.
The mastermind behind this effort is Don Hodor, a man who has led a few chambers in his day, including Southpointe’s, which he founded.
The secret to a successful chamber? “Members want to network and improve their profitability,” he said.
Thanks to our page sponsors - This web site page has been made possible by the donations from Southpointe Telecom Technology and Southpointe Industries.
PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT We are presently inviting any members that are interested on being on the 'leadership' committee. We need your ideas and input on this newly formed chamber. go to committee@southpointe.net to register.
This YouTube video courtesy of 'Marcellus Shale Coalition' is an excellent summary of what this new energy discovery is about. In Pennsylvania, Marcellus exploration created more than 88,000 new jobs over the past two years, with researchers from Penn State predicting that number will climb past 110,000 new jobs over the next 12 months. Some of these jobs go to the folks who drill the wells, naturally — but the vast majority are along the supply chain.
Tejas Gosai will be one of our guests at the Feb. 9 chamber luncheon at Bella Sera

Conceived as retail site, Southpointe II benefits from Range Resources, Marcellus Shale
Pittsburgh Business Times - by Bonnie Pfister Date: Friday, March 25, 2011, 6:00am EDT - Last Modified: Thursday, March 24, 2011, 6:31pm EDT
Nestled in the rolling hills of longtime farm and coal country, Southpointe in Cecil Township is rapidly becoming the unofficial capital of Marcellus Shale gas-related business.
The original Southpointe opened a decade ago and has grown into the region’s second-largest business park, after RIDC in O’Hara Township. The 690-acre, 2.3 million-square-foot complex includes Mylan Inc., ANSYS, CentiMark, AccuTrex, Columbia Gas, and Janney Montgomery Scott.
As an encore, Canonsburg-based developers Horizon Properties Group LLC conceived Southpointe II as a 500,000-square-foot mix of shops, offices and restaurants, anchored by a 14-screen cineplex.
Southpointe Chamger of Commerce announces newly formed "Marcellus Shale Chamber" a group focused on gas well energy and related busineses. The mission is to help local businessmen to be a part of this economic upturn. "Helping local businesses in the Southpointe area 'connect' with all related aspects of the gas well industry is our primary concern and focus" said Executive Director of the chamber, Don Hodor. This newly formed chamber shares offices with the Southpointe Chamber and although missions are closely related, more emphasis is placed on the gas well industry.
The highest concentration of gas reserves is running right thru our area. (Click on picture to zoom in)
You can see on the map above - Marcellus is the largest gas reserve in the country. Our purpose is to inform you of updates on the program and to focus on opportunities to be a part of the growth.

QUESTIONS MOST ASKED ABOUT 'MARCELLUS SHALE' GAS RESERVES
What is Marcellus Shale?
The Marcellus Formation is a unit of sedimetary rock found in our area, named for a distinctive concentration near the village of Marcellus, NY. It extends throughout much of the Appalacian Basin. The shale contains largely untapped natural gas reserves in high-demand markets of the North Eastern cities. This makes it an attractive target fo energy development.
How much natural gas is here?
According to a study - ("Unconventional natural gas reservoir could boost U.S. supply". Pennsylvania State University. 2008-01-17. http://live.psu.edu/story/28116) This is enough to satisfy approximately two years' of total U.S. consumption,or a total value of approximately one trillion US dollars! Ok, I think I understand - Shale relates to where we get the gas, Marcellus is the name of the reserve pocket. Exactly what is shale gas?
Shale gas is natural gas produced from shale, very deep underneath our surface. (Maybe 2 miles) Shale gas has become an increasingly important source of natural gas in the United States over the past decade, and interest has spread to potential gas shales in Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia. One analyst expects shale gas to supply as much as half the natural gas production in North America by 2020.
How long will the enrgy companies be in the area?
Estimates are beyond 20 years but the rate of return on wells will steadily decline in production rate over the years. It's safe to say, energy companes will be around here for a long time. Most energy companies are here to stay with major committments in office building construction and 20 year payback investments - Many in Southpointe.
How can I be a part of this economic opportunity, especially if I don't own land with mineral rights?
There are many opportunities to be a part of the energy income pipeline. We are in the first phase - the initial Geology related jobs and contractors tackling buildout of wells. We as the Southpointe Chamber must help to identify and target the job and contract opportunities.
Give some examples of business opportunites with natural gas?
If you are not in the 'energy business' you can focus on other ventures related to the 'trickle down' needs of the industry. This includes building material sales, vehicle sales/service, equipment sales/rental, housing, transportation, food services, maintenance opportunities, advertising, legal services, real estate leasing/ sales, etc. i.e. most of the energy companies are moving into offices, relocating skilled labor, hiring locally, sourcing housing and require support services and products ranging from retail sales, entertainment, services and more.
How can the Southpointe Chamber help me to connect with this growing industry?
You can start by joining our Southpointe Chamber. (Go to main page and scroll down to member application online) Also, We are hosting a 'Southpointe Tradeshow' in Februaury. Many of the energy related companies will be in the show as they were last year. Go to 'tradeshow page' for this Feb 25 program and register online.
Below is a construction site sign of the four-story building which is located close to The Iceoplex, Consol Energy's new headquarters, and Interstate 79.
Southpointe has become a favorite location for companies entering the Marcellus Shale play, partly because it is close to major Marcellus drilling areas in southwestern Pennsylvania, which are located in Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties. Currently, Range operates out of two buildings at Southpointe, where about 175 people are employed. When the new headquarters is completed, Range will be home to between 500 to 700 jobs in Southpointe II.
