CAL IN THE NEWS!
Ellie Nesser, Sothpointe Campus Executive Director

Do you have someone special in your life that is affected by heart disease?  If so, will you help make a difference?  Please join me, Ellie,  in the fight against heart disease.

AHA Heart Walk, Sat., Oct. 1st, 2011 @ 9:00am, Consol Energy Park, Washington, PA

My challenge to each of you . . .  Help me in some small way to promote the American Heart Association HeartWalk.

1)  You can simply forward this email to colleagues, friends or family to generate awareness.

2)  You can join our team, create your own team or recommend our webpage to someone.  We are at http://heartwalk.kintera.org/washingtonpa.

Click on California University of PA link.  There you will find the Cal U –Southpointe Center Team page.

Click on Cal U – Southpointe Center, Join Team or Ellie Nesser.

If you decide to be a Cal U - Southpointe Center team member, you can walk on your own time or walk with us the day of the event.

Either way, you are contributing to keeping your heart healthy and spreading the word about this disease.

3)  Give a donation by going to our team webpage or sending me a check made payable to the American Heart Association.

It can be any amount.  [As little as a $5 donation will help.]

4)  Help a child or teenager get involved.  Ask your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins to walk with us.

Childhood obesity is taking over our nation.  We can help our children, just by asking them to walk.

If you are interested in being a member of the “Cal U – Southpointe Center” Team or have any questions about this event,  please visit the team webpage at http://heartwalk.kintera.org/washingtonpa or contact Ellie Nesser at 724-873-2760 or at nesser@calu.edu.

Free t-shirt for all team members.

This is an interview with Ellie Nesser, Executive Director of California University of Pennsylvania Southpointe Center. Ellie was Assistant Director for 7 years and became Executive Director 3 years ago.

Do you live in the area?
Yes, Don, I live in Uniontown and commute to Southpointe daily.  Our southwest corridor is a great place to live and work.

Are their any changes you have made in the California University Southpointe facility in the last three years?  Yes, we now focus heavily on professional, corporate and workforce development training for companies in Southpointe and the southwestern region of PA.  The Center also serves students, faculty and professionals wishing to pursue degrees onsite or online.  Our global online programs are available to students nationally and internationally.

Does the school have programs that specifically integrate training with companies in the area?  We are currently a partner with Workforce Economic Development Network of PA (WEDnet PA).  With this partnership, we help to provide training programs for manufacturing and technology-based companies in Southwestern, Pennsylvania.

How does that work?  WEDnet PA partners with 33 schools throughout the state.  We are one of the partners in the southwest corridor.  Companies can apply once a year for the guaranteed-free training program or can be awarded a Governor’s Action Team grant.  Once a company has been awarded funds, they can begin to train their employees in basic skills or information technology.  The training can be provided by the partner, a third-party or in-house by the company.

Can you further breakdown the training offered at Southpointe California?  We have three institutes at the Southpointe center – Institute for Law and public policy, Institute for criminological & forensic Sciences and Robotics.  These are courses targeted to people in professional fields.

What are the degree programs?   We offer four degree programs onsite – Accelerated degree completion for the Bachelor Science and Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Nursing,   Master of Science in Business Administration and Master of Education in Elementary Education with Certification.  To view the Global online programs available at Cal U, please visit our website at www.calu.edu

Can you put a specialized curriculum or training program together for a company specific need?    We offer customized job training to any company in the state.  We meet with the company and review a training plan and then put together a curriculum based on the company needs.  We have several trainers on board with expertise in leadership, business, graphics, social media, technology, safety and communication skills.

Do you have a program where companies can reimburse the student who is taking night courses?  Many companies offer tuition reimbursement and students can utilize those monies toward a bachelor or master degree.  We also work with the Careerlink Centers in several counties and provide degree programs in business.  Careerlink can fund two years of schoolwork for individuals that meet requirements under the Workforce Investment Act.

Do you have a teleconferencing center available to companies in Southpointe?   We have state-of-the-art video conference and teleconferencing facilities in Southpointe and can link in a local, regional, national and international tele or video conference.

Can you send trainers to companies to conduct classes or is that practical?   We have a portable ‘state of the art’ computer lab that is utilized for non-credit training for companies who wish to conduct training at their facility.

Is their anything special you are planning on during for the upcoming Feb 25 Southpointe Tradeshow?
Yes, we will have several departments from Southpointe and main campus here to preview services offered by the University for the community.

It has been great talking with you.  On behalf of myself the Southpointe Chamber Board of Directors, we would like to thank you and the California staff for providing this opportunity to bring all the business neighbors under one roof to exchange ideas, education and commerce.  We look forward to new programs and working with you in the future.
